Biography

I was born in Brunswick, a town right in the heart of German province Lower-Saxony in 1975. However, my parents moved to Berlin when I was 1 year old and despite of the fact I used to keep them awake all night long they kindly took me with them. So, I really grew up in Berlin and I do feel that this is my true home town. However I moved to Heidelberg in 1998, where I studied Computational Linguistics, English and Musicology. So far so good. Inspite of this I have always been a singer-songwriter. It's what I've always wanted to do and, in my opinion, there's nothing better than the perfect symbiosis of lyrics carried by a melody. So I go out and seek them. Most of the times I fail. In the end it's usually the songs who find me. Please read more about my quest in the next section.

My Songs, Chansons and Lieder

A question I am asked a lot is: How do you actually write songs? What is first - the words or the melodies?

To tell you the truth - I don't really follow a certain pattern. It's different with each song who cares to find me. Sometimes the words find me first. Sometimes it's the melody. In the most perfect case they both find me together. If they don't, whatever is missing (either words or melody) gives me a hard time. They don't let me find them. They find me when they decide the time is right. But well, that's the nature of the beast! And I simply love it. I must be out of my mind!

So - you're dealing with a person who is totally crazy. Which is true! I'm crazy about word play, interesting rhymes, beautiful images. I like to explore the diversity and richness of a language. I find it fascinating in how many ways you can express what you want to say - or can't. What I found out is that the key to good lyrics is the knowledge of words. Sometimes you have to create new words. Sometimes you can give a spark to old words. Nothing is impossible! Sometimes you have a million words that would rhyme but you cannot find the one that matches with your song! As I said before, it's complete frustration. But believe me: however big the frustration may be while actually writing the song - the joy when the song has actually found you is at least a 100 times higher!

Why do I write in three languages? Well, I started writing in English since I felt closer to English than German for a long time. At around 1995 I began writing in French, since I had many French acquaintences back then. But well, I gave up pretty soon since I found it too difficult in the end. However, 10 years later, in 2005, I really felt an itch to write in French again. The "Nouvelle Scène de la Musique Français" was surely one of the reasons, and yet I hesitated. The Francis Cabrel concert in Strasbourg in 2005 was the decisive factor.
At this concert I had the idea to write a song for him. After all, his music has been accompanying for quite some time now. During the concert I also realized that his songs, especially his melodies, and later also his lyrics, had inspired me the most. In the end I found out that it wasn't as difficult as I thought to write in French. After "La Voix Qui M'Accompagne" I wrote other French songs and revised my former French Lyrics. This language is so beautiful that I just cannot keep from writing it it! I started writing in German only recently, which is a great enrichment. My main role models are the group Element of Crime and Dota, die Kleingeldprinzessin (Dota, princess of small coins). They make German sound almost flowing and soft in their songs.
